The reason to wait becomes obvious, when you look at the upcoming release of computer hardware. The i7 series chips are due in November this year and the Mid ranged i7 chips are due to hit the market 1st/2nd quarter of next year. Also the new AMD chip is due soon as well. These are awesome chips and the computers will be insane and affordable. I do not think you will be required to own a new i7 computer but the release of them raises the overall bar on "average gaming computers". Multiple cpu cores, 4+GB of ram and a 8800 gt to hit "average bar" at that time. I also believe that Windows 7 (the final stage of the longhorn project, Vista was the 1st stage, will launch soon as well. This puts good old XP at end of life and support.)
That's...not a good thing. There's a reason most MMOs have lax system requirements (Hint: playerbase); adapting to new technology is irrelevant. (Really, who cares about DirectX 10 anyways?)

Even then, "state-of-the-art" is not such a good thing in computing, since no one wants to upgrade their system every two years just to keep up with Moore's Law just to play a video game. (Case in point, Crysis)

An MMO which cannot be played on computers released 3-4 years prior at a reasonable framerate is, doomed de facto (case in point, AoC.)

PS: For those that are curious for what I've been doing since my "hiatus," I haven't really been playing computer games much, especially not MMOs, thanks to the lovely thing called college. I play TF2 occasionally, but mostly it's just Halo 3 and Mario Kart with my dorm. Of course, that'll change when Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 come out.

That and that's against ArenaNet's philosophy anyways. They build games that can be ran on a wide variety of computers.

There hasn't been any GW2 news because it's still very early. They released the news on it WAY too early into production.

Actually, games only built on top of the growing HW requirement that Microsoft sets for the new Windows. And Crysis could be run ok on 1 year-old PCs (8800gt) with low-medium settings, it's only a highly demanding game when you're asking it to be. And Moore's Law doesn't explain everyting, look at how PhysX is coming to age, and more and more applications (not only games) are using it heavily. SW demand drives HW progress

And that's exactly what Anet has been good at, have low HW requirements to be able to run the game, but it can run beautifully with nice, shiny HW. And I'm sure they'll raise the bar considerably with GW2, still keeping the entry point very low, in line with their philosophy. I've started playing GW on a low level spec PC, able to comfortably enjoy the stunning landscape and action, then discovered its beauty with a new 8800gt-based PC. But I know I can go back to an average PC to play it any time.

Actually, what makes GW technology so appealing is not only the graphics, but how good the network layer is (independently from the fact that it seems that they're now running on top of average network service providers to run their servers, which causes quite a lot of lag, I guess they chose "cheap" ones so as to not run out of budget, because paying for all these talented people when your stream of revenue is so thin must be difficult!)

i wouldn't mind the lack of info
increases the *whaw* effect when we get news
it's like Valve does with their games
when it's near release they give some trailers and everyone goes *whaw*

N1ghtstalker has a valid point, and that's honestly probably it. But if you ask me, a portion of the reason is because Anet is largely more active with the community than like... any MMO I've played since Everquest, and they know how people like to whine and complain about anything and everything, so instead of giving people time to rant and kill their sales potential by spreading BS to every forum on the internet, they decided to stay sealed tight and wait until the perfect moment when their game is at the peak of it's potential and nearly ready for shelves.

And on top of it all, mystery creates curiosity, and curiosity creates interest.

And an interview or some screenshots on gamespot from time to time creates an interest ten times bigger.

Perhaps, but we honestly don't know what they are scheming, so it's hard to assume anything at the moment. Maybe they don't want to give us high hopes and have to delay the game, or maybe it's just something we haven't thought of yet. In any case we will just have to deal until they want to share with us, not much we can do here.

The pretentiousness of some people on this forum is nauseating. GW2 will come out when it is ready and ANET needs no help from us. We will make our judgment when the game comes out as to whether it justifies our purchasing it.

I think I agree with Fril here. When I first started playing GW on my first laptop (with a 9900 series Radeon XD) it looked great and ran okay. Then I bought computer parts, and built my own system with a Radeon X800 and it looked great. Now I have yet another system with two NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX graphics cards on SLI(DX10 with Vista, even though it's wasted with GW1) and the game looks outstanding! There is definitely a noticeable difference between this system and my previous ones and that's definitely a nod to new hardware and the foresight of ArenaNet to capitalize off of that.

I think I remember ArenaNet saying something about World PVP, with hundreds of players in the same game at the same time with the ability to jump in whenever(No one entering will be a hindrance to their team.). Seems like it'll take some pretty heavy hardware to do that, and the Mid-Range PCs at the Guild Wars 2 release will have to be able to keep up. I hate to say it, but some people will probably have to buy new parts to keep up with Moore's Theory.

Valve normally releases something. As does Blizzard, and BioWare.

Look - Anet squandered the momentum of one game, why should we be surprised if they do it with another?

Is this the same -Half Life 2 is going to be released next week, oh a hacker has stolen our sources, now you have to wait half a year- Valve i remember? Yeah, when they release something about an upcoming game, it's substantial...

"Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms" announcement E3 1999.. coming soon

Blizzard released information for Starcraft:Ghost and a point&click Warcraft Adventure. Both ending up getting axed.

As for BioWare they announced Dragon Age being in production way before GW was released and there was no screenshot in public until this summer.

@seut:
Yes, but you didn't respond to what Bunny said at all dude. Valve does stuff just like Blizzard and that they only release something if they are 100% satisfied with it. There is a difference between releasing INFO (which is what he meant not games) and releasing no info at all. (and for the record, StarCraft: Ghost was developed by Swinging Ape Studios, not Blizzard.)

The difference here is, is that Valve and Blizzard only release info when the game is already way way along in development (years), when ArenaNet released Guild Wars 2 introduction info when it was barely on its feet.

Also Guild Wars went through a graphic and visual and design overhaul just like Team Fortress 2 actually. Guild Wars used to be a more WoW graphic style until they changed it to what you see today.

As I said above, ArenaNet just simply released the whole GUILD WARS 2 COMING OMG way too early (probably desperate to keep people playing). They didn't post any info because they didn't have any really. They don't post info now because they're still probably finalizing a lot of content and they don't want to say X and people freak out when it's Y or doesn't exist. They have to be very careful with what they say, especially now, considering people are very rabid for info on it and take even the smallest things the wrong way. (infinite levels? omg so much grind...even though they never explained the leveling system which COULD BE the exact same as GW1 just for a number going up but no power going up, for example)

You should be taking this a good way: it means they're being a lot more careful about not making mistakes this time around, instead of taking it as a sign of them squandering you, imo.

Some of the features of SWTOR sound very GW2-like to me...

In fact, the whole story-based aspect of SWTOR plus the incorporation of "Hero-like" companions sounds very promising to me. I also like the fact that BioWare is actually telling people what they're up to and some of the new features players can expect. SWTOR sounds like it is offering more of what I liked best from GW (Heroes/henches, story-based progression).

Thus far, SWTOR is the only MMO in development or that has been released recently that actually sounds more appealing to me than GW2.

I just prefer actual information over "something"which later turns out to be false and all this praise for Valve, Blizzard and BioWare isn't always justified.
Valve lied to their community about the HL2 release until it was too late.
BioWare kept quiet about the details of Mass Effect's PC-Version DRM until it was released.
Blizzard's Jay Wilson (D3 lead designer) is already hinting that some functions of the upcoming Battle.net might not be cost free and when asked about it he changes the subject.
Don't get me wrong. Some of my favorite games are from these companies, but i don't think they are infallible and all those companies had their times, when they didn't want to release certain information.

Anet made the decision to end GW1 and announced it and their future plans some months later. When would've been a better time than the announcement of the last to be released product of the line?
-after the release of EotN, when people ask questions what the Hall of Monuments is for?
-half a year after EotN release, when people ask questions about the next GW1 campaign/expansion?
In my opinion there was no other date they could've announced GW2 without being disloyal to their community (except announcing it even earlier).

lol, do you know how to make a game? do you have any idea how long it takes?
you think those starcraft 2 / Diablo 3 things happened overnight, just cause they weren't announced?

look up when development started for those games, then think how long Gw 2 has been in development.
